About Lorna Simpson Multimedia artist Lorna Simpson is known for her pioneering approach to conceptual photography. Simpson was the first African-American woman ever to to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and to show in the Venice Biennale. Twice included at Venice, she has also been included twice in Documenta. Born in 1960, Simpson has charted a pioneering course dealing explicitly but poetically with slavery, race politics in the USA, and the politics of racial identity, gaze, power and wealth distribution.
