Joan Didion: What She Means offers a chronological look at the writer's life and career, highlighting her fascination with the two US coasts she lived between and her singular voice as a pioneer of "New Journalism". The volume was published to accompany a major exhibition of the same name presented at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, which opened less than a year after her death in 2021, and features more than 200 works across all mediums by approximately 50 artists, including Brice Marden and Betye Saar, curated by Hilton Als.

About Joan Didion As a Westerner transplanted to New York, writer and journalist Joan Didion was able to look at her the mores and fixed rules of behaviour of the West Coast with the loving and critical eyes of a daughter who got out and went back. She published essays, novels, and also wrote screenplays with her late husband John Gregory Dunne.
