About Kazu Nakagawa Noted for both the creation of enigmatic worlds in miniature and for imbuing large-scale projects with an almost mystical presence, what ties Nakagawa's practice together is his embrace of the Japanese concept of 'ma' - the space between or around, negative space. Conceptual underpinnings inform his decision on materiality (or immateriality) of each work, employing materials from wood, metal, paint and graphite to evanescent materials such as shade and sound. While Nakagawa's work is often described as minimalist, labels and boundaries have little meaning to him - his journey into art was one of 'feeling', as was his journey to New Zealand, and each work continues to be 'felt'.
